Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believes that the rapid growth in window shopping will eventually shutdowns the shopping centres in urban areas. I do not agree with this notion as many shoppers still prefer to shop in-person from malls.

To begin with, Old generation usually prefers to visit the shopping malls for day to day shopping as they want to check the quality, size of clothes by themselves. They feel if they shop online, they are wasting money because they are just watching the pictures and have not idea about sizes and quality of things. For instance, CNTV recently published an article on the shopping habits of individuals where they explained the different viewpoints of customers regarding window shopping. Most of the people criticised this trend as they feel it is waste of time and money. Therefore, it is evident that Grey generation still prefer to shop in towns and cities.

Furthermore, I fell youth also prefers to shop in urban cities as they get an opportunity to spent some time with their friends. To explain it better, Most of the times, when students get some break from their classes they always plane to go for shopping. By doing so, they would get extra time to spent with each other and also they will help each other to select dresses and the ornaments. For example: I read an article which was published on India news magazine regarding Social Life. I read that people are so busy in their lives that they do not have time to visit their friends or families. They only meet with their friends when they planned to go out for shopping as they gets the reason to meet each other. It clearly states that shopping is not just a way to buy stuff, it is also the connecting method for people in todays fast paced life.

To conclude, I would like to say online shopping is getting more attention nowadays but it cannot be the reason to close down shops in cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. You provide two main arguments—the preference of the older generation for physical inspection and the social function of shopping for the youth. While the ideas are relevant, they could be further developed with more specific analysis rather than relying on generalisations about 'Grey generation' or 'youth'. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and could have been used to better summarise your main points. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task by presenting a clear argument supported by examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' to signal the progression of your argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'they' in the second paragraph could refer to either the older generation or the shoppers in general). The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'notion', 'urban areas', and 'fast-paced life'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'window shopping' (which usually refers to looking without the intention to buy, whereas your context implies general shopping) and 'connecting method'. Additionally, there are minor errors like 'plane' instead of 'plan' and 'fell' instead of 'feel'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring your vocabulary is used in the correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Some people believes', 'they gets the reason') and article usage. There are also some punctuation issues, such as the colon usage in the second paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
