Student answer (Band 6.0)

The development of online shopping will one day lead to closure of all offline shops in towns and cities. I completely disagree with this view, and I will prove my stance in the ensuing paragraphs before drawing a rational conclusion at the end.

To begin with, shopping offline have many advantages over online shopping. Firstly, Consumers can actually feel and try the product before buying it. For example, when someone is buying clothes, they can try and feel the quality of clothes and they can try wearing it before deciding to buy it. However, this scenario is not possible for online shopping. Secondly, there are many scams going on while doing online shopping, such as money fraud, data privacy breaches, and low quality products. To explain this, If someone order branded cloths or shoes, sometime they get low and cheap quality duplicate products.

Furthermore, older adults still prefer to buy from local shops, as they do not have much knowledge of online shopping. Lastly, to support local economy, shopping from local shops is necessary. In other words, online shopping website such the Amazon, Flipkart and Temu are multinational company. If people buy products from this online stores, then their local shops owners will run in loss. As a result, local economy will decline.

To recapitulate, local town shops will not close in the future because they give satisfactory shopping experience, no risk of fraud, good option for elderly people and they are backbone of local economy. These are main reasons why I disagree with this viewpoint.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments provided—such as the tactile experience of shopping and the economic impact on local communities—are relevant and logically linked to the topic. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point regarding scams could be expanded with more specific examples or a deeper analysis of how physical stores mitigate these risks. While the response covers all parts of the task, the depth of the arguments is more characteristic of a Band 6.0, as some points remain slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'To recapitulate' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences within paragraphs are slightly abrupt. For example, the jump from discussing scams to the quality of products could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the central idea of each paragraph is clear, which supports a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'data privacy breaches', 'multinational company', and 'local economy'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'shopping offline have' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'local shops owners will run in loss' (should be 'run at a loss'). To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise and varied academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('shopping offline have', 'someone order branded cloths') and pluralization ('local shops owners'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in capitalization and article usage. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
