Student answer (Band 8.0)
It is often argued that the rapid expansion of e-commerce will eventually result in the complete disappearance of traditional physical stores in urban areas as well as in rural areas. I completely disagree with this viewpoint because shops offer immediate gratification and a unique, sensory shopping experience that digital platforms cannot replicate.
The primary reason why brick-and-mortar stores will survive is the human desire for tactile experience before making a purchase. When buying items like clothing, cosmetics, or high-end electronics, customers often prefer to see, touch, and test the product in person. This hands-on interaction dramatically reduces the risk of dissatisfaction. For example, a recent consumer report in Canada showed that despite the convenience of online apparel websites, over 60% of shoppers still prefer trying on clothes in physical dressing rooms to ensure a perfect fit and material quality. Consequently, physical stores remain essential for high-assurance shopping.
Furthermore, retail shops serve a vital social and recreational purpose in towns and cities. For many individuals, shopping is not just a transactional errand but a leisure activity spent with friends and family. Town centres and shopping malls act as social hubs that integrate retail stores with entertainment venues, cafes, and restaurants. If physical stores were to close completely, urban areas would lose their vibrant community culture. This is why many successful brands now use an omnichannel approach, running physical showrooms alongside their websites to offer consumers the best of both worlds.
In conclusion, while online shopping will undoubtedly continue to dominate the modern retail market, it will not lead to the total closure of high-street shops. Physical stores fulfill fundamental human needs for product validation and social interaction that the digital world simply cannot replace.
