Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that digital shopping will lead to the closure of stores in towns and cities in the future. I disagree with this statement because of individuals' trust issues and the quality retail stores offers to consumers.

The primary reason why shops in towns will not completely shut down is that people are facing trust problems. To be more specific, although online shopping offer convenience, it lacks the security of payment methods, and sometimes products are not delivered in the expected condition. For instance, while Temu is an app used for online shopping, it has scammed many people by sending them faulty products. Therefore, people lost trust for this particular app and prefer to shop offline.

Another fact is that online shopping often compromises the quality and quantity of the product. This is because door-to-door shopping offers shoppers a chance to feel the quality of the product and the colour, which is not the case with digital shopping. For example, when people shop from online stores such as Amazon, they mainly return products due to colour and quality. So, there are significantly less chances of stores closing in the cities.

To conclude, I think that offline shopping will remain intact even though the courage of digital shopping is increasing because of the authenticity and quality that physical store offers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the closure of physical stores. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the argument. While the ideas regarding trust and product quality are relevant, they are not fully developed. The examples provided, such as mentioning Temu and Amazon, are helpful but could be expanded to better support the main arguments. Because the response is only 220 words, it fails to meet the length requirement, which negatively impacts the overall development of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To be more specific', 'For instance', and 'Another fact is', which help connect ideas. However, the transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall structure feels slightly underdeveloped due to the brevity of the response. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'digital shopping', 'convenience', and 'authenticity'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'the courage of digital shopping' (likely meant 'the growth' or 'the prevalence') and 'quality retail stores offers' (subject-verb agreement). To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'online shopping offer' should be 'offers', and 'there are significantly less chances' should be 'fewer chances'. Additionally, 'the quality retail stores offers' is grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on accuracy in subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
