Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, online shopping has become a favourite way to shop. Some people believe that it not lead shops to close, while others disagree with this idea. In this essay, I will explain why I disagree with that online shopping will one day lead to all shops in cities and towns to close and provide examples to support my perspective.

Firstly, people have been preferring to shop by visiting the store. This is because of trust, and customer satisfaction. Customers and vendors shares a mutual respect. For instance, customers prioritise trying on clothes before buying them. They would like to put on different styles, colour and size of clothes before choosing the final item. Therefore, it is clear that online shopping will not lead to close worldwide.

Additionally, time is a major factor in shopping. The timeframe of visiting a store and buying a preferred clothing item is much shorter than shopping online and waiting for deliver. On the other hand, people believe that online shopping applications such as Amazon, Shopify and Facebook will one day lead all shops to close in cities because of their promotion and marketing. However, this argument is flawed because they could not built trust and offer equal customer satisfaction as these shops/service providers are online. As a result, I believe that online shopping will not lead to all shops in towns and cities to close.

To conclude, while it is true that online shopping extends significant discounts, the benefits of shopping in-store such as trust and relationship between customer and vendor far outweigh the drawback. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the statement that the rise in online shopping will one day lead to all shops to close.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses the task by taking a clear position that online shopping will not lead to all physical shops closing in towns and cities. The essay presents several relevant ideas to support this stance, such as customer trust, physical interaction like trying on clothes, and the speed of in-store purchasing compared to delivery times. However, some arguments lack full development. For example, the point regarding delivery times versus immediate purchase is introduced but not deeply extended. Furthermore, there is a slight contradiction in the introduction where the student mentions some people believe it will not lead shops to close, yet subsequently states they disagree with online shopping leading to all shops closing. Despite these minor limitations, the main parts of the prompt are addressed with a consistent position throughout, aligning with the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving appropriately from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing trust and time factors, followed by a logical conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'On the other hand' is used rather abruptly to introduce the counter-argument, and referencing within sentences occasionally leads to confusion, such as 'they could not built trust' where the antecedent for 'they' is slightly unclear between applications and online platforms. Paragraphing is adequate, but overall the logical progression and cohesive ties occasionally lack smooth integration, placing this performance firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'customer satisfaction', 'mutual respect', and 'promotions and marketing'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, morphological, and collocation errors throughout the response. For example, the student writes 'it not lead shops to close' instead of 'will not lead', 'vendors shares' instead of 'vendors share', 'waiting for deliver' instead of 'waiting for delivery', and 'could not built' instead of 'could not build'. While these vocabulary and grammatical slips do not impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score. The use of less common items is attempted, but inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making a Band 5.5 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several recurring errors in verb tense, auxiliary verbs, and infinitive structures. Examples include 'it not lead shops to close', 'disagree that online shopping will one day lead to all shops... to close' (awkward complement structure), 'people have been preferring' (improper continuous usage for a general preference), and 'could not built trust'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in basic sentence construction cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from reaching a Band 6.0. The control of grammar is patchy, supporting a Band 5.5 evaluation.
