IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the expansion of digital shopping will one day result in shutting of all stores in urban areas. I completely disagree with this view as physical stores provide suggestions from shopkeepers. This essay will discuss the reasons behind my opinion in the following paragraphs.

The most compelling reason why I disagree that stores in metropolitan areas will not closed due to online shopping because shops provide guidance from shopkeepers. Stores have managers and shopkeepers who help their customers choose the right product according to their requirements and also educate them about the current sales running on stores. For example, women are sometimes confused about which dress suits on them. At that time, guidance from a salesperson is required to select perfect dress. They can guide a woman regarding the suitable size and colour of the dress.

Another reason why physical shops will not disappear is they provide assurance of products. Some customers like to check the colour and size of the product physically. Thus, they can better take decision that this product can fit their requirement or not. Moreover, this can reduce the chances of receiving a faulty product for customers. For example, buyers can check any electronic items such as a fan or a washing machine at the time of purchase. Therefore, it will reduce the chances that they can receive a damage product.

To conclude, although online shopping has become increasingly popular nowadays, I believe that physcial stores will not close due to this. This is because these shops provide guidance from store person and a guarantee of products.

However, there are notable lexical and collocational errors throughout the text, such as 'shutting of all stores' instead of 'closure', 'running on stores' instead of 'running in stores', and 'damage product' instead of 'damaged product'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are evident, but inaccuracies in word choice prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Communication is not impeded, making Band 6.0 an accurate reflection of the lexical control.

Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and they rarely impede communication.
