IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is an ongoing debate over whether the increasing popularity of online shopping can take over the entire shopping industry by shutting down the convenience stores in urban areas. While some individuals believe that the statement is true, others oppose it. Although online shopping brings plenty of benefits to individuals,from my standpoint, it will not completely replace the traditional shopping centers to the extent of closing permanently.

One of the major reasons why people prefer shopping via digital devices because it is convenient to purchase items over the internet. To cite an example, in Canada, during the extreme weather conditions for instances, during snowy days, people either use Uber eats or Walmart delivery app to get groceries just to avoid going out. As a result, they get items delivered to their places by paying a certain delivery charges which not only saves their fuel costs but also helps them skip the extremely cold weather. Thus, because of the ease provided by online shopping, more customers prefer it over traditional shopping style.

On the other hand, conventional shops will not be entirely swapped away by online shopping due to numeorus considerations. The main reason behind it is that customers have more faith and trust in shopping personally rather than purchasing on the apps. They can check a product before buying it which gives them a sense of satisfaction that they made a right purchase. Additionally, some online apps cause scams and frauds as well. To illustrate, one of my co-worker faced an issue of bank data breach while using Temu app which is quite famous in Canada. Her credit card information was leaked and she had to block the card which affected her credit score. Therefore, in order to avoid these situations buyers usually prefer the local shops rather than the shopping apps.

Taking everything into account, I finally conclude that even though the online apps offer significant advanatges to purchasers by making shopping a home task, the trust and security people feel in using stores to do shopping is the major reason that online shopping methods can never entirely take over the shopping markets.

Referencing is generally clear, although occasional awkward transitions appear, such as 'The main reason behind it is that...', but these do not disrupt the overall flow or readability.

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to the task, with successful attempts at less common items such as 'convenience stores', 'urban areas', 'data breach', and 'credit card information'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'swapped away' instead of 'swept away', and 'make shopping a home task', which slightly limit precision. However, spelling and word choice errors are infrequent and never impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient for some flexibility and precision, fitting comfortably into Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or multi-clause sentences like 'Although online shopping brings plenty of benefits to individuals, from my standpoint, it will not completely replace...'. There are a few grammatical errors and minor punctuation slips, such as missing articles ('facing an issue of bank data breach') and slight phrasing issues ('during the extreme weather conditions for instances, during snowy days').
