Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position disagreeing with the prompt, which is maintained throughout the essay. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as the social and experiential benefits of physical shopping and the ability to compare prices and check clothing sizes. However, some ideas are under-developed or supported with weak explanations. For instance, the discussion on price comparison lacks depth, and the examples citing specific percentages from fictional sources appear slightly unconvincing, which prevents the task response from achieving a higher level of development. Despite this, the main stance is clear, and the core arguments are directly related to the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for this band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an unfinished conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as price comparison in the second paragraph and relaxation benefits in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, evident in vague pronoun use like 'they feel more relaxed and satisfied' where the antecedent is slightly obscured. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with disagrrement', 'To explain this', and 'Furthermore' are employed to structure the text, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally stumbles due to repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'forthcoming paragraphs', 'urban areas', and 'physical shopping'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that occasionally cause strain. Examples include 'Some masses argued' instead of 'Some people argued', 'I am totally disagree' instead of 'I totally disagree', and the misspelling of 'disagrrement'. Additionally, phrases like 'doing shopping' and 'check the prices' show a limited control of collocations. While communication is not severely impeded, these persistent lexical inaccuracies place the response firmly in this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting complex structures with subordinate clauses such as 'when they go outside for shopping as compared to online'. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently marred by errors in grammar and punctuation. There are notable issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'people gets lot of variety', article omissions ('buy something', 'at cheaper rate'), and awkward prepositional usage ('shopping by visiting that place'). Although these errors do not completely obscure the meaning and the reader can follow the general argument, the presence of frequent grammatical inaccuracies in basic and complex structures restricts the score to this level.
