Student answer (Band 6.0)

Online shopping has become increasingly common in contemporary society today. The significant increase of internet shopping may eventually result to the a massive shut down of walk-in stores in towns and cities. Although online shopping seem convienient and offers a wider range of choices for customers, through online apps, including discounts, without having to walk round the store, walk-in stores will not be shut down entirely, due to its access to checking the products in person before buying, and its swift response in getting one's goods.

On the one hand, internet shopping is more flexible, due to the fact that one does not need to be physically present in stores to purcahse whatever services or needs the person wants. Online shopping also provides variety of choices to choose from without having to move around in the stores looking for them, it makes one calm and relaxed while going through their mobile apps searching what they want without being pressured about time or having to waste time deciding what to pick as each product comes with description. Discounts are mostly available on internet shopping, making one pay less and saving some little change. For example, one who is really busy at work and needs food, cannot leave their place of work to get them. He/she could easily order a pizza or icecream from a food app. This makes it easy and convienient for the person.

On the other hand, physical stores which gives consumers the opportunity to access their products in person before making payments and check its genuinety will not be entirely shut down. Moreover, customers have the chance to pay for their goods and get them immediately without having to wait for delivery as it may cause delay and not advisable for emergency cases. For example, if a person has an event the following day, he or she can go straight to the boutique to get whatever he or she wants, as soon as possible without further delay, as it may ruin their chances of attending the event if their clothes are not delivered in time.

Overall, despite the fact that online shopping has increased significantly due to its convienience and flexibility, I disagree to the fact that physical stores also helps people who likes to see what they want for themselves and also beneficial for cases of emergency.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you disagree that online shopping will cause all physical shops to close. You address both sides by acknowledging online shopping’s flexibility, choice and discounts, then explaining the value of inspecting goods and obtaining them immediately. The pizza and clothing examples make the reasons relevant and understandable. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the online-shopping paragraph gives several benefits, while the case for physical shops is developed mainly through two points. Some claims, such as stores allowing customers to check a product’s “genuinety,” would be stronger with a more precise explanation or example. To develop the response further, explain why these advantages will continue to attract enough customers to keep different types of shops operating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs contrast online and physical shopping, and a conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Overall” helps readers follow the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some sentences contain several ideas joined together, making the progression less smooth. For instance, the sentence beginning “Online shopping also provides variety” moves from choice to feeling relaxed, time pressure and product descriptions without clearly separating these points. References such as “its” in the discussion of physical stores are also not always clear. Group related points more selectively and use shorter sentences or clearer links between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “flexible,” “wider range of choices,” “discounts,” “delivery,” and “emergency cases.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “physically present” and “in person.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “convienient,” “purcahse,” “genuinety,” and “shut down” are problematic in this context. Some combinations are unnatural, including “saving some little change” and “access their products.” Repetition of “online shopping,” “stores,” and “person” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “retailers,” “physical shops,” or “brick-and-mortar stores” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “due to the fact that,” and “as.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation make parts less controlled. For example, “Although online shopping seem” needs subject–verb agreement, while “physical stores which gives” also has an agreement error. The opening sentence contains a faulty construction in “result to the a massive shut down,” and the long sentence beginning “Online shopping also provides variety” joins several clauses without clear punctuation. The conclusion’s “physical stores also helps” and “people who likes” show further agreement problems. Review agreement and article use, and divide long sentences so each clause is complete and clearly punctuated.
