Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction on the recent article posted about my hometown Surat. The article reported Lalbhai contractor cricket stadium as local cricket facility, but it has been approved to host international matches from upcoming year.

Firstly, your magazine is one of the top selling travel magazine in my town. The incorrect information spreads incorrect information to an international readers. The Lalbhai contractor stadium has gone under significant redevlopment, and now it can hold upto 40,000 spectetors and have LED lightning facility to play under the sky. Secondly, the stadium holds recreational activities to boost players physical as well as mental strength such as a swiming pool, a gym, a yoga centre and much more.

Furthermore, I would like you to update your information by publishing new article solely based on this cricket stadium. Should you require more details, I would like to assist you further and would love to take you on a tour.

I am looking forward to hear back from you.

Yours sincerely,

Anand.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the incorrect information regarding the stadium, explain the importance of accuracy for an international audience, and provide a constructive suggestion for the magazine to rectify the error. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing specific details about the stadium's capacity and facilities to support your correction. The response maintains a consistent and clear position throughout, effectively meeting the requirements of a General Training Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points required by the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. However, the progression of ideas is logical, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'redevelopment', and 'recreational activities'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'redevlopment', 'spectetors', and 'swiming', which slightly detract from the overall quality. Additionally, some collocations could be more precise, such as 'under the sky' (better: 'under the lights' or 'open-air') and 'local cricket facility' (better: 'local cricket venue'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively to the intended recipient.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'dissatisfaction on' (should be 'dissatisfaction with'), 'from upcoming year' (should be 'from the upcoming year'), and 'looking forward to hear' (should be 'looking forward to hearing'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader. You show a good grasp of formal letter structure, and the majority of your sentences are clear and correctly constructed. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate the score further.
