Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to make a request of correcting the information regarding an article about my hometown that is published in an international travel magazine.

The information about my hometown regarding public transportation and infrastructure is not mentioned in a correct manner. As Ahmedabad is a growing metropolitan city, transportation has been significantly improved as metro trains and electric buses has been introduced in order to curb pollution. Moreover, buildings are constructed in an exquisite manner so they look luxurious and modernized.

It is crucial that magazine provides authentic and real information as readers would interpret false ideas about it and the honesty and trust would be compromised.

I would like you to take preventative measures of avoiding such issues and kindly provide specific training to the staff as it is vital to publish genuine and original content to build trust of the readers.

Kindly consider my request and looking forward for your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Juhi Nayak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You identified the incorrect information regarding transportation and infrastructure, explained the importance of accuracy for the magazine's reputation, and suggested staff training as a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the incorrect information in the article (e.g., mentioning what the article specifically claimed) to make the letter feel more authentic and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'It is crucial that', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'metropolitan', 'exquisite', 'curb pollution', and 'authentic'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'make a request of correcting' (should be 'request to correct') and 'build trust of the readers' (should be 'build the readers' trust'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey your message clearly and appropriately for a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'metro trains and electric buses has been introduced' (subject-verb agreement error: 'have been') and 'looking forward for your positive response' (preposition error: 'to'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The sentence structures are generally controlled, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would further improve this score.
