Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to bring this to your attention, about the incorrect information that was printed in your magazine about my town. The whole article is about the impression of the town at the first glance. First and foremost, the incorrect wording about the town, which says that the town does not provide the good vibes to the visitors. It would be an experience of an exception person but you can come and I would be happy to give a tour of my town.
However, the point is not that you wrote it in your magazine without without any evidence, but this will worse the reputation of my town. Moreover, after reading your article there is decline in the visitor record. The decline directly affects the business that depends on the tourism.
In contrast, you can take interviews of more tourists and ask about the hospitality given by the people of the town. I hope you will print a new positive article again in your magazine which will help to gain the lost reputation.
I am looking forward to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Mike.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding the 'decline in the visitor record' is a good attempt at justifying why accuracy matters, but the tone is occasionally informal and slightly repetitive. While the task is fulfilled, the ideas could be expanded with more specific details to reach a higher band. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, though some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'the impression of the town at the first glance'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'However', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or forced. For instance, the connection between the incorrect wording and the invitation to visit is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the opening sentence where 'this' refers to an unstated situation. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the flow could be improved with more sophisticated linking words and better sentence-to-sentence cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'worse the reputation' (should be 'worsen') and 'visitor record' (should be 'visitor numbers' or 'tourism figures'). The student relies on fairly simple language to convey their message. While the meaning is always clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the score. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise verbs and adjectives to describe the impact of the article and the desired outcome.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the incorrect wording... which says that the town does not provide the good vibes' (article usage and phrasing) and 'I am looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'to hearing'). There is also a repetition error: 'without without'. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex sentences, but these often contain minor errors in syntax or preposition usage.
