Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to you regarding an article which I read last week in your travel magazine related to my town Amritsar.
To begin with, In a magazine you have mentioned about various historical places located in my town but information related to one particular place called as the Golden temple is incorrect. Firstly, you have mentioned this place has three entry points but in actual it has four doors, which represents that individuals from each religion is welcome to this temple. Secondly, this place stays open for devotes for all year around and not only during summers as mentioned in an article.
Therefore, it is important to correct these errors as this is a religious place and many individuals can get offend with the wrong information related to their religious believes.
However, I would suggest it that magazine company to stop the production of a magazine with error and re-print with accurate details. Also, they can organize a press conference and address the entire situation publicly.
I hope you will look into this matter as soon as possible and I look forward to your prompt response.
Kind regards,
Sukhman.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the errors regarding the Golden Temple's entry points and operating hours, explained the importance of accuracy due to the site's religious significance, and provided suggestions for rectification. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on why the magazine's misinformation might specifically impact the local community or tourism. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader through your arguments. While the structure is sound, some of the cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the paragraphing is appropriate, though the transition between the explanation of the error and the suggestion for the magazine could be smoother. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, making it easy to follow your line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'historical places', 'religious significance', and 'prompt response'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'many individuals can get offend' (should be 'offended') and 'religious believes' (should be 'beliefs'). You also use 'magazine company' and 'stop the production of a magazine', which are slightly repetitive and less precise. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring correct word forms, as these small errors slightly limit the precision of your communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'information related to one particular place called as the Golden temple' (the 'as' is unnecessary), 'devotes' (should be 'devotees'), and 'all year around' (should be 'all year round'). There are also some issues with article usage and verb forms. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim for greater control over complex sentence structures and proofread carefully to eliminate minor slips in subject-verb agreement and word formation.
