Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to raise my concern regarding an article published by your media in international travel magazine the last Sunday about the description of ancient building in my town which i found have irrelevant details was mentioned about it.

The background history that your magazine was tried to explain not biased on its reality. As I red you declared wrong name of its founder and the constructor who built it during ancient time. In addition, there was incorrect information about its history as it was introduced to provide shelter to those societies who lost their homes during 1947 war, but you have written it was used by authorities for their political meetings that parts I want you to make it correct.

Since this article almost everyone in my society prefers to read as per their spare time habit so it should be imperative to have relevant information in it. Also, it would have negative impacts on the young people who are unaware about these historical events they will acquire false knowledge while reading these incorrect insights.

I would like you to give advise like could you please always read throughout each and every aspects about the theme who are going to write in your magazine and also keep in mind the things that will not harm the overall growth of young generation.

Yours faithfully,

Bhagwant Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the incorrect information regarding the building's history and founder, explained the importance of accuracy for the local community and younger generations, and suggested that the magazine should conduct more thorough research. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited by grammatical issues, which occasionally make the intended meaning slightly difficult to follow. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are more clearly articulated and that you maintain a consistent, formal tone throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition' and 'Since', to link ideas. However, the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and sentence structure, which makes the progression of ideas feel a bit mechanical. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the advice and the magazine's research process could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clearer transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'imperative', 'irrelevant', and 'historical events'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'media in international travel magazine' instead of 'publication', and 'not biased on its reality' instead of 'not based on facts'. Some phrases are also slightly unnatural, such as 'spare time habit'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they limit the precision and sophistication of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('magazine was tried to explain'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward sentence construction ('the theme who are going to write'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with run-on sentences that lack proper conjunctions or full stops. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable and impacts the fluency of the text. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for tense consistency would significantly improve your score.
