Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to draw your attention to the information you have mentioned in your article is incorrect.

I have read the article which mentioned a detail regarding our town was incorrect and misleading. In the article, they have mentioned that the town is not well developed and doesn't contributing to the city at sufficient level economically. That information was completely wrong because recently our city won the award for second largest capital town in a state.

I believe, you should give correct information, otherwise it can mislead people and seen negative impact on people's minds. Providing incorrect information can also reduce your magazine's popularity and trust in public. So, please confirm any information before you print.

In this situation, you should give another detail article regarding the facts and complete information about the town. As a result, a clear picture can be defined in the public's mind, and misconception cannot occur. I am requesting you to take such measures as early as possible.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the incorrect information regarding the town's economic development, explained the importance of accuracy for the magazine's reputation, and provided a constructive suggestion for a follow-up article. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. To improve, ensure that your explanation of why accuracy matters is more nuanced; while you mention 'negative impact on people's minds,' expanding on the potential for economic or social damage to the town would have strengthened the argument further. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In this situation,' 'As a result,' and 'I believe,' which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be improved by using a more sophisticated linking phrase. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'misleading,' 'economically,' and 'misconception.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it is somewhat basic. There are a few minor errors in word choice, such as 'detail article' instead of 'detailed article' and 'doesn't contributing' (which is also a grammatical error). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of saying 'the town is not well developed,' you could use 'the town is economically stagnant' or 'under-developed.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies that occur throughout the text, such as 'doesn't contributing' (should be 'does not contribute'), 'seen negative impact' (should be 'could have a negative impact'), and 'misconception cannot occur' (which is slightly unnatural). Additionally, the opening sentence is a run-on: 'I am writing to draw your attention to the information you have mentioned in your article is incorrect.' Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency will help improve your score.
