Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing to express my concern about the false information regarding Ahmedabad in an article published Yesterday in an International travel magazine. The article states that the Patang hotel is situated on the bank of Narmada River. However this information is incorrect. The patang hotel is actually located on the bank of Sabarmati river.

I believe that the information published in a magazine should be accurate because many people rely on magazines and articles for information, especially about different cities and towns. The Patang hotel is one of the famous landmarks in Ahmedabad, and many tourist visit it because of it's unique architecture.

It is revolving restaurant rotates 360 degree, offering a mesmerizing view of the Sabarmati River. Therefore published incorrect information about its location may confuse visitors and make it difficult for them to

find the hotel. For this reason, it is essential that articles provide accurate information.

To resolve this issue, I kindly suggest that you published a correction in your next edition and update the online version of the article, if available. In addition, I recommend that your editorial team verify all facts carefully before publishing future articles to prevent similar mistakes. This steps will help to maintain magazine's credibility.

I look forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Bijal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the incorrect information regarding the Patang Hotel's location, explained the importance of accuracy for tourists and the magazine's reputation, and provided constructive suggestions for rectification. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a clear understanding of the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are consistently formal; while 'Dear sir' is acceptable, 'Dear Sir or Madam' (as requested in the prompt) or 'Dear Editor' is more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'In addition' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the phrase 'This steps will help', the demonstrative pronoun should agree with the noun, which would be 'These steps'. Overall, the flow is smooth and the structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'mesmerizing view', 'maintain magazine's credibility', and 'verify all facts' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'published incorrect information' (should be 'publishing') and 'many tourist visit' (should be 'tourists'). While these errors do not impede communication, addressing them would enhance the precision of your writing. You have a good grasp of topic-specific vocabulary related to travel and journalism.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'It is revolving restaurant rotates' contains a subject-verb confusion, and 'it's unique architecture' incorrectly uses a possessive apostrophe (should be 'its'). Additionally, 'This steps' should be 'These steps'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessive pronouns versus contractions.
