Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam

Hope you are doing good. I would like to share my deep appreciations for the work your magazine is doing in bringing some great content for their readers. I am sure this would be a laborious task for the team and therefore, please pass my admirations for them. I am writing this letter in context with the article it published in the recent edition about my native town Delhi, India. It was an informative article, however, some of the facts about the city were mentioned incorrectly. To quote one of them is the language spoken, the article says that main language of the city is awadhi when Hindi is largely spoken in all parts of the city. Another such fact mentioned in the article was about religions followed in the city. The article says Hinduism is the majorly followed in the city when it is a very secular state and all religions are widely followed and respected. I am highlighting these facts as these will give a wrong impression to anyone travelling to the city. We, the readers, highly rely on such magazines and newspapers for the authentic information around such places, also consider these as facts for future references, therefore, it is very important to convey the correct information so that these cities are perceived correctly for what their actual form is. I am hoping that you would take this feedback as constructive and consider the accuracy of facts as a key factor for future articles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You identified the incorrect information regarding the language and religion of Delhi, explained the importance of accuracy for travelers, and suggested that the magazine should prioritize fact-checking in the future. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. However, the response could be improved by being more specific in the final suggestion; for example, you could have suggested that they publish a correction or an erratum in the next issue. Overall, the ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'another such fact', and 'therefore' to link your ideas. However, the text is presented as a single block paragraph. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the specific corrections, the explanation of importance, and the final suggestion. This would significantly improve the readability and flow of your letter. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of paragraphing makes the overall structure feel slightly dense.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'laborious', 'authentic', and 'perceived'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'in context with' (should be 'in connection with' or 'regarding') and 'majorly followed' (should be 'predominantly followed'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the meaning is always clear, and you successfully convey your message using a variety of relevant vocabulary related to the topic of travel and journalism.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the article says that main language' (missing article 'the'), 'To quote one of them is the language' (awkward phrasing), and 'information around such places' (should be 'about'). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, such as the lack of a comma after the salutation. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on article usage and sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
