Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to point out some vague facts about my town that your company just published in their recent article under the name of "know about another town". Actually, I came to know about when I read about last sunday. I want you to pay to some points your article mention about our town's famous 18th century fort. In the article, it is mentioned that it was built by the british empire t protect the city from outside invaders in 18the century. However, I want to let you know that it was constructed by third Mughul Emperor named Akbar. This fact can be cross checked from number of historical books which are available in city's public library. The reason I want you to rectify this is because this fort represents a unique identity and culture of our city. This fort saved many of our generations from outsiders and have a very important place in town's history and its people.

Therefore, I request you to print the whole new article about our town in the next magazine by putting reference to many historians' quotes about this town's fort including the statement that this article will replace the previous one, one that has wrong historical information about town .

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: you corrected the information regarding the fort, explained the importance of accuracy, and suggested a solution. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why accuracy is important is a bit repetitive, focusing solely on the fort's history. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the broader impact of misinformation on the magazine's reputation or the potential confusion for tourists. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening is slightly awkward.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific correction and then to the proposed solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, you use 'In the article' and 'This fort' frequently, which makes the flow feel a bit stilted. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the correction and the request for a new article could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words would help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'rectify', 'invaders', and 'historical'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'vague facts' is not the best fit for 'incorrect information', and 'pay to some points' is grammatically incorrect. Additionally, 'Mughul' is a misspelling of 'Mughal'. While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, the errors in word choice occasionally draw attention to themselves, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in 18th century'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'fort... have a very important place'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'I came to know about when I read about last sunday'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic articles and verb tenses would significantly improve your accuracy.
