Student answer (Band 6.0)

DEAR SIR OR MADAM

I HOPE THIS LETTER FINDS YOU IN RADIANT HEALTH AND BEST OF SPIRITS. I AM WRITING THIS LETTER TO INFORM YOU REGARDING THE INFORMATION PRINTED IN 'HAWKS MAGAZINE.

TO BEGIN WITH, MYSELF, PRASHANTI MISTRY AND I AM A RESIDENT OF HAWKESBURY CITY WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE BORDER OF ONTARIO PROVINCE. I AM READING YOUR ARTICLES PUBLISH IN HAWKS MAGAZINE SINCE LONG. BUT, RECENTLY I CAME ACROSS 'OUR TOWN' ARTICLE WHICH CARRIES INFORMATION ABOUT MY BEAUTIFUL CITY HAWKESBURY. THE INFORMATION ABOUT RIVER WHICH CONNECTS HAWKESBURY OF ONTARIO AND GRENVILLE OF QUEBEC IS THE RIVER 'LONG SAULT' AND NOT 'SAINT CLAIR'.

IT IS CRUCIAL TO GIVE RIGHT INFORMATION ABOUT NATURAL RESOURCES BECAUSE SOMETIMES MISINTERPRETATION CAN CAUSE TROUBLE AMONGS TOURSIST. FOR EXAMPLE, IF TRAVELER POST THEIR PICTURE WITH WRONG LOCATION THEN PEOPLE ATTRACTS AND START KNOWING BY THE FALSE PRINTING.

I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST YOUR COMPANY TO CORRECT THE PRINTING MISTAKE ABOUT THE RIVER. HOWEVER, I WILL GIVE CLARITY TO THE VISITORS AND SOCIETY THAT THE ORIGINALITY OF ITS BEAUTY IS IN THE NAME. AND MAKE SURE TO PRINT THE REVISE VERSION OF AN ARTICLE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION. HOPING FOR THE ACTION WILL BE TAKEN TOWARDS PROBLEM.

SINCERELY,

PRASHANTI MISTRY

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. Your tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why accuracy is important is a bit vague and could have been expanded with more specific consequences. Additionally, the suggestion for the magazine to 'make sure to print the revised version' is a bit abrupt. To improve, ensure your arguments are fully extended and clearly linked to the context of the magazine's reputation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions are slightly awkward, such as the shift in the final paragraph. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between the river name and the tourist's behavior is not fully articulated. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'natural resources', 'misinterpretation', and 'consideration'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'I am reading your articles... since long' (should be 'have been reading... for a long time') and 'people attracts' (should be 'people are attracted'). Some phrases are also slightly unnatural, such as 'radiant health and best of spirits', which is overly flowery for a formal complaint letter. Focusing on more precise collocations and standard formal expressions will help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('people attracts'), article usage ('the river 'Long Sault''), and tense consistency ('if traveler post their picture'). Additionally, there are punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the use of all-caps for the salutation and missing commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses.
