Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this to bring your attention to an error in the article about my hometown Richmond, Which was published in the July edition of your magazine. While I thoroughly enjoyed this article and appreciated the feature, there is a significant factual inaccuracy regarding our local transportation infrastructure that require rectification.
This article mistakenly states that our historic waterfall district is only accessible by private vehicles and lacks public transport options. In reality our city expanded the regional light rail network two years ago. We now have a fully operational rapid transit station right in the heart of the waterfront district. operating daily with frequent connections to the international airport.
Providing accurate information is absolutely vital for an international publication of your stature. Thousands of global travelers rely directly on your recommendations to plan itineraries, budget their trips, and make commuting decisions. Misleading details like this can easily discourage budget-conscious tourists or those who prefer eco-friendly transit from visiting our beautiful historic sites, which ultimately hurts our local businesses and hospitality industry.
To remedy this situation, I suggest that you publish a formal correction note in the upcoming issue's errata section. Additionally, it would be highly beneficial if your editorial team updated the digital version of the article on your website to ensure online readers receive the correct transit details moving forward.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identified the error regarding the transportation infrastructure in the waterfall district, explained the importance of accuracy for travelers and local businesses, and provided actionable suggestions for the magazine to rectify the situation. The tone is professional and appropriate for a letter to an editor. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have maintained a consistent and formal register throughout the response, which is essential for this type of task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, and the transition between the identification of the error, the explanation of its impact, and the suggested solution is smooth. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In reality', 'Additionally', and 'To remedy this situation'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your argument, making the letter easy to follow and professional in appearance.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the formal context of the letter. Phrases such as 'factual inaccuracy', 'rectification', 'regional light rail network', and 'budget-conscious tourists' show a high level of lexical control. The word choices are precise and contribute to the professional tone of the correspondence. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation, and the vocabulary used is sophisticated enough to convey your message clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate good control over punctuation. There is a minor slip in the first paragraph where 'Which' is capitalized mid-sentence, and a subject-verb agreement issue ('infrastructure that require rectification' should be 'requires'). However, these are rare, non-systematic errors that do not impede communication. The use of complex structures, such as the participial phrase 'operating daily with frequent connections', adds variety and sophistication to your writing.
