Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter regarding an article in an international magazine about my hometown Ahmedabad. Although, I find this article very fascinating it has some inaccurate information.
First and foremost, an article gives information about the location of Ahmedabad, as it is situated on the banks of river Narmada rather than Sabarmati river. It is well known and vital for the city. Moreover, my city has rich history and diverse culture in addition , it is comes under world's heritage city.
News plays a crucial role in providing clear information to the public. That is why it is very essential to double verify the details which should be printed. My city has renowned for its culture and rich heritage among the tourists.
I would therefore suggest the magazine publish correction as soon as possible. Other than that, editor should post this article online so public can read and do not get confused.
I hope you make some changes and cautious next time.
Yours faithfully,
RHP

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You identified the incorrect information regarding the river, explained the importance of accuracy in journalism, and provided clear suggestions for the magazine to rectify the error. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on the specific impact the misinformation might have on tourists visiting Ahmedabad. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; the current structure is functional, but more sophisticated use of linking phrases would improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inaccurate', 'fascinating', 'vital', and 'renowned'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'it is comes under world's heritage city' (should be 'it is designated as a World Heritage City') and 'cautious next time' (should be 'more cautious'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'Although, I find this article very fascinating it has...' (incorrect comma usage and missing punctuation), 'an article gives information' (should be 'the article'), and 'do not get confused' (should be 'do not become confused'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and punctuation in complex sentences.
