Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am a resident of Saskatoon city. Recently, I have read an article in your travel magazine about my town. I was so happy to know that your magazine has chose our town. However, some information about my town's heritage has written incorrectly. I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards it and provide some suggestions to correct it. In magazine, it was mentioned that 'Mewasin' river of our town is the 3rd longest river in Canada. Whereas it is the longest river of Canada. The most astoinishing thing is that along with river, there is 15km long trail. Which does not have any of the river in the world even. 'Mewasin' river of our town has a important historical place in Canada and It is a pride of our town.

Travel magazine play a crucial role to sharing the information across the world. Tourism mostly depend on the travel megazines and travel magazines are the trustable source of information regarding perticular place. Therefore, it is consequential to print correct informations in it. I would really appreciate if your magazine will correct this information and re-print it in a next article. If possible please appologies to your reader for this mistake. If you required further information, I would very happy to provide it.

I hope you would consider my point and take an immediate action towards this situation. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Vaishnavi Dana.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You identified the incorrect information regarding the river, explained the importance of accuracy in travel journalism, and suggested that the magazine issue a correction and an apology. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, although the development of the 'importance' section could be slightly more sophisticated. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively, maintaining a clear purpose throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However,' 'Therefore,' and 'In addition,' to link your ideas. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions between sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump between the river description and the importance of travel magazines is a bit abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'heritage,' 'consequential,' and 'crucial.' However, there are several spelling errors ('astoinishing,' 'megazines,' 'perticular,' 'appologies') and some awkward collocations ('has chose,' 'information... has written'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise word choices and ensure that your spelling is consistently accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Travel magazine play,' 'Tourism mostly depend') and incorrect passive voice usage ('information... has written'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some sentence fragments, such as 'Which does not have any of the river in the world even.' These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your score.
