Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir and Madam,

I am writing a letter regarding false information about my home town named Jolly Town that I read in an article of your international travel magazine.

In your article, it was mentioned that Jolly Town is situated in the north of California, USA and is a small town with serene views. However, it was mentioned that many facilities except gym was present in the town. This is incorrect as Mr. Hogwarts, president of Jolly Town, inaugurated the gym facility 2 years ago. This has been an important development in our town as exercise is extremely important to stay healthy and fit in life. The gym has various equipment and machines for people of all ages to work on their health and fitness journey. The facility also includes 4 fitness trainers who specialize in different forms of workout, meal planning and lifestyle choices.

The economy of the town is largely depended on the tourism. Readers of the magazine who are potential visitors will plan their holidays to Jolly Town based on the information provided. This misleading or false information can have serious consequences on the tourism of our town. Gyms are essential and people do not want to miss out on an important part of their routine during their visit to Jolly Town.

I suggest you do adequate research before publishing any article. Such mistakes can put you in legal troubles which can have negative effects on your magazine's reputation. Additionally, kindly publish another article about Jolly Town and add all the relevant and necessary information.

Kind regards,

Amal Hamid

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the incorrect information regarding the gym, explain the importance of accuracy for tourism, and provide a constructive suggestion for the magazine to rectify the error. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing sufficient detail to support your points. The letter follows the required structure and maintains a consistent, professional position throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor factual inconsistencies—such as the greeting 'Dear Sir and Madam'—are avoided, as the prompt specifically requested 'Dear Sir or Madam'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the identification of the error to the explanation of its impact and finally to the proposed solution. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Additionally', and 'This is incorrect as' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like 'inaugurated the gym facility', 'potential visitors', and 'misleading or false information' show a solid command of language. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'depended on the tourism' (should be 'depends on tourism') and 'put you in legal troubles' (should be 'legal trouble'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision, and you successfully avoid repetitive language throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'many facilities except gym was present' (should be 'were present') and 'the economy of the town is largely depended' (should be 'depends'). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong. The grammatical errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader or obscure your intended message.
