Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this to express my dissatisfaction with the information provided in your international travel magazine.

To begin with, a couple of days ago, I read an article about my hometown that contains false information which was published in your magazine. I want you to correct the information in the article that in my hometown there is a lack of hygiene which was was totally incorrect. Well, to be honest this would mislead locals when it comes to hygiene, however every month government officers takes the hygiene check which makes sure that my town has the good health measures.

I would like to suggest you that magazine can rectify the information by publishing a new article on my hometown health and safety measures with correct information. Please do not hesitate to reach me if you need any further information.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Keertan Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why accuracy is important is quite brief and could be expanded to better reflect the impact on the town's reputation or tourism. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening could be more direct. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with supporting details to demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the main body, and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition 'To begin with' is used, but the flow between sentences within the second paragraph is slightly disjointed due to awkward phrasing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'which') is precise would help the ideas flow more naturally and enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You have used some relevant terms such as 'dissatisfaction', 'rectify', and 'measures'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or phrasing, such as 'government officers takes the hygiene check' and 'my town has the good health measures'. These do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to formal correspondence and professional complaints.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'which was was totally incorrect' contains a repetition error, and 'government officers takes' shows a subject-verb agreement error. Additionally, the sentence 'I would like to suggest you that magazine can rectify' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your point, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your score.
