Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to draw your attention to an international travel magazine that I read this morning. The magazine contains some false information regarding my town. The information shows incorrect images and highlights the topic too much, which seems pessimistic.

However, it is crucial for the magazine to give correct information so every individual knows the truth about what is going rather than thinks negative about my town. Moreover, sometime people get shocked or surprise by reading such information which they remember for long time in their mind.

I suggest that in this situation, those printing press department stops to print more copies of this magazine. Apart from that, they should print the correct information of my town in upcoming newspaper so that if people read today incorrect data then they read correct data tomorrow mornings.

warm regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For instance, you mention the information is 'incorrect' and 'pessimistic' but fail to specify what the actual facts are, which makes the correction vague. The explanation regarding why accuracy matters is clear, but the suggestion to stop printing the entire magazine is perhaps unrealistic and lacks nuance. To improve, provide more specific details about the error and offer more practical, professional solutions, such as publishing a retraction or an erratum in the next issue.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'what is going rather than thinks negative'. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the problem and the proposed solution could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'draw your attention' and 'crucial'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'printing press department' (which is redundant) and 'read today incorrect data'. The range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic vocabulary. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to journalism and travel writing, and ensure that your word choices sound natural in a formal letter context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include 'sometime people get shocked or surprise' (should be 'sometimes' and 'surprised'), 'stops to print' (should be 'should stop printing'), and 'in upcoming newspaper' (missing article). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure in the second paragraph is slightly repetitive. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
