Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all three bullet points: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these ideas is limited. The explanation regarding the town's name is somewhat confusing, and the suggestion to 'print the magazine again' is unrealistic for a magazine, showing a lack of awareness of the context. The tone is inconsistent, shifting from a formal letter to a more conversational style. While the task requirements are met, the depth of the response is insufficient to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The letter lacks clear paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices; sentences are often strung together with 'and' or run-on structures, such as the long sentence beginning with 'I want to explain...'. The logical flow is hindered by the lack of punctuation and clear transitions between the correction, the explanation, and the suggestion. The overall structure is quite mechanical and lacks the necessary formal organization expected in a letter to an editor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'corection', 'catacj' (likely meant 'catch'), and 'cardit' (credit). The phrasing is often unnatural, such as 'didnot be acceptable' and 'on the name of army one'. The range of vocabulary is limited to simple, everyday language, and the student struggles to express more complex ideas clearly due to these lexical limitations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede readability. There are significant issues with sentence structure, including run-on sentences and missing punctuation. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent (e.g., 'the my town', 'the india'). The use of tenses is also problematic, such as 'didnot be acceptable'. While there is an attempt at complex ideas, the lack of control over basic grammar and syntax means that the majority of sentences contain errors.
