Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently saw your article in an international travel magazine which I brought from Walmart yesterday. I am pleased to see my hometown in your renowned magazine with the display of town's ancient gate which is paramount to reach to larger audience.

I am writing this letter because I found magazine mentioned about overtourism in our town, which is completely wrong. Our town is economically depended on tourism which is highly seasonal over here. After seeing statement of overtourism, people could cancel their plans to visit this town. I want you to correct this information, and help us to bring more tourist here.

It is essential to give correct information to tourists. So, they can make plans to stay in the town and explore different segments of this town rather than just watching old town and history.

This situation can be tackle by reprinting correct details or updating information on your social media channels.

Hoping to hearing back from you with updated details.

Kind regards,

Sahil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when explaining why accuracy is important, you could have elaborated more on the potential long-term economic damage to the town rather than just mentioning the cancellation of visits. Additionally, the suggestion to 'reprint' or 'update social media' is clear but could be more persuasively argued. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing this letter because' and 'This situation can be tackled by' to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraph could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renowned', 'paramount', and 'economically dependent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'brought from Walmart' (should be 'bought') and 'economically depended' (should be 'economically dependent'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some phrases feel slightly unnatural, such as 'display of town's ancient gate'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message effectively in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'found magazine mentioned' (should be 'found that the magazine mentioned'), 'seeing statement' (should be 'seeing the statement'), and 'bring more tourist' (should be 'bring more tourists'). Additionally, 'Hoping to hearing back' should be 'Hoping to hear back'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as ensuring that complex sentence structures are punctuated correctly.
