IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in an international travel magazine which contained some information about your town that is incorrect.
Write a letter to the editor of the magazine. In your letter
- correct the information in the article
- explain why it is important for the magazine to give correct information
- suggest what the magazine should do about this situation
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to address you that recently i just read an article in an international travel magazine regarding our downtown which i felt is irrelevant to some extent.
The article directly states that our town lacks public gardens at all which i feel is incorrect to some extent because two years ago, in the centre of the town, a bonnie park was developed specially for the kids to rejuvenate themselves.
Mentioning right information is very crucial nowadays as for our senior citizens who only read articles instead of using mobile phones this remains hidden and all the new migrants finds it arduous to get to know about the town without the articles. Although, it was built for kids but that garden has an extremely aesthetic and soothing vibe for students and relaxing environment for the older people.
I would suggest if reposting the same article could help about it just by molding the facts a bit would be a great help.
Yours Sincerely,
Parul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding why accuracy is important could be more robust; while you mention senior citizens and migrants, the connection to the magazine's reputation or the impact on tourism could be explored further to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to an editor, though some phrasing is slightly informal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the correction, the justification, and finally the suggestion. Paragraphing is present, although the structure is a bit compressed. You use some cohesive devices like 'Although' and 'as for', but the flow between sentences can feel slightly mechanical at times. The referencing is generally clear, but some transitions between ideas could be smoother to improve the overall readability. Overall, the information is arranged coherently, and the reader can easily follow your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'irrelevant', 'aesthetic', 'soothing', and 'arduous'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'address you that' is not standard usage; 'inform you that' or 'draw your attention to' would be more natural. 'Bonnie park' is a bit unusual in this context, and 'molding the facts' is slightly informal for a formal letter. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'i just read' (capitalization of 'I'), 'lacks public gardens at all' (awkward phrasing), and 'all the new migrants finds' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, the sentence 'I would suggest if reposting the same article could help about it just by molding the facts a bit would be a great help' is structurally convoluted and grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing.
