Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you in good and prosperous health. I am writing this letter to draw your attention on your mistakes in a recent article about an international travel magazine.

Firstly, I am a huge fan of your and I have already read you many articles and magazines. Actually, I have currently read an article about India in which you have mentioned that India has six Union Territories. Although, there are eight Union Territories in India right now. So I guide you to make correction of this.

Well, there are so many people like me in the world who generally prefer to read travel magazines to gain knowledge about different countries. Hence it is very crucial to have correct information. If I talk about myself I always choose to collect all information from different sources before visiting any new place.

Moreover, magazine should stop to sell anymore before making corrections. They should reprint all the articles with new corrections and then they should launch it again.

It would be a pleasure to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Khushi patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the suggestion to stop selling the magazine and reprint all copies is a bit unrealistic and could be developed with more nuanced alternatives, such as publishing a correction in the next issue. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the response effectively communicates the writer's intent to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Hence', and 'Moreover', though some are used in a slightly mechanical or repetitive way. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the identification of the error to the justification for accuracy and finally to the suggested action. However, the referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as in the phrase 'I am writing this letter to draw your attention on your mistakes in a recent article about an international travel magazine', which could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'I guide you to make correction of this' instead of 'I suggest you issue a correction'. Additionally, 'I hope this letter finds you in good and prosperous health' is a bit overly formal and slightly clichéd for this context. While the range is sufficient to complete the task, there is limited use of less common or more sophisticated lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter to draw your attention on your mistakes' (should be 'to'), 'I have currently read' (should be 'I recently read'), and 'magazine should stop to sell' (should be 'stop selling'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. The punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with sentence construction. To improve, the student should focus on verb patterns and preposition usage.
