Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter, regarding the misinformation in the article published by your magazine.

In my town we are not homophobic,we treat LGTBQ community with love and respect and there is has been no such thing as crime on the LGTBQ community in my town because,we all live as one large community and see no differences with the people living in the community.I saw you Magazine article that my community people hate the LGTBQ living in our community.

The reason am trying to correct this wrong information,is that my town is accused wrongly and the because of the wrong information, the tourism rate in my town is reducing with people thinking we are not loveable people and not accepting the gay community.

I would suggest you can research on towns or grant interviews on whatever topic, your magazine wants to publish out to be able to have the right information about the town. Not publishing the wrong the information and tarnishing the image of the town and giving it a bad reputation.

I would be expecting a quick response.Thank you.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: correcting the misinformation, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding the impact on tourism is a good start, but it could be expanded with more specific details to make the argument more persuasive. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although some phrasing is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully developed with more sophisticated reasoning and clearer links between the misinformation and the consequences for your town.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the correction, the impact, and finally the suggestion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the repetitive use of 'in my town' and 'in the community'. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the explanation of the problem and the suggested solution could be smoother. The punctuation, particularly the spacing after commas, is inconsistent, which occasionally disrupts the flow of the text. Improving the variety of linking words would help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'misinformation', 'tarnishing', and 'reputation'. However, there is a lack of variety, and some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'not loveable people' or 'grant interviews on whatever topic'. There are also some minor errors in word formation and collocation. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic or formal vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for a formal letter to an editor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, there are issues with comma usage (e.g., 'misinformation, regarding'), missing spaces after punctuation, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there is has been'). Additionally, some sentences are run-on or lack necessary articles. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and punctuation rules will significantly improve your score.
