Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding an article which was published on Ottawa travel magazine on July second about Small town Beni, Myagdi which is located in south-east of Nepal.

Some of the important details about that town is factually incorrect and contradicting some historical facts. Firstly, town is located almost 2000 meters from sea level however, in an article was published 200 meters. Secondly, that place never been colonized by French it was part of British territory in seventeen century which contracts the historical facts.

It is crucial to give correct information to the public because this publication is massive and huge number of population reads this paper. In addition to that, this town is famous for international travelers who might get wrong information when they visit this place.

If possible could you please publish an article again with more details and accurate information so everybody will get accurate information.

Thank you for understanding this matter let me know if you need any

Yours faithfully,

keshav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: correcting the information, explaining the importance of accuracy, and suggesting a solution. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the town is at 2000 meters rather than 200, providing a bit more context or a more professional tone in the correction would strengthen the response. The suggestion to publish an article again is clear, but could be more specific regarding how the magazine should rectify the error (e.g., a retraction or a correction notice). Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of explanation could be improved to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In addition to that' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and missing articles, such as 'in an article was published' or 'in seventeen century'. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the correction of facts and the explanation of why accuracy matters could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that place', 'this town') is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'factually incorrect', 'colonized', and 'territory'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'massive and huge number of population' (which is redundant) and 'contracts the historical facts' (where 'contradicts' was intended). There are also minor errors in preposition usage and article omission, such as 'on Ottawa travel magazine' instead of 'in the Ottawa travel magazine'. Expanding your range of vocabulary and focusing on precise collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the writing. Common issues include missing articles ('in seventeen century', 'in an article'), subject-verb agreement errors ('details... is factually incorrect'), and awkward sentence construction ('that place never been colonized'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, you should practice proofreading for basic grammatical errors, specifically focusing on articles, verb tenses, and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
