Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to highlight some wrong information that is provided in your July month magazine related to my city "Khanna".

As you have mentioned that it has 2 square kilometers area but specifically it is 2.2 and the males are dominating females but to be exact 64% of all the population are men while rest are women. It has also conveyed that it has biggest grain market but it is second biggest and biggest in Asia. You have mentioned that there is hidden gem that is temple fully made of glass by foreign workers but actually it is located around 15 kilometers in a very town named as Ramgarh.

As your magazine has readers across the globe so if such information is delivered in wrong way then it affects not only to your reputation but also hide the exact information to the travellers who are planning to visit the city.

I can tell you certain things about this city which is not described by anyone so far as I am living here since birth.

Please publish the right information conveyed by the people who are residing in the city and write an article in next month edition.

Yours sincerely,

Alan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You identified the incorrect information regarding the city's area, population demographics, market status, and the location of the temple. You also explained the importance of accuracy for the magazine's reputation and the travelers' experience, and you provided a clear suggestion for rectification. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, ensure that the corrections are presented with greater clarity; for instance, the sentence regarding the grain market is slightly confusing in its phrasing. Overall, the task is fully covered with a clear purpose maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific corrections, the impact of the errors, and finally the requested action. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which aids readability. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. Transitions between sentences could be more varied to improve the flow. For example, the transition 'As your magazine has readers...' is functional but could be more sophisticated. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the repetitive structure of the arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputation', 'residing', and 'conveyed'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices that limit the score. For example, 'July month magazine' should be 'July issue of your magazine', and 'in a very town' is incorrect usage. The phrase 'hidden gem that is temple' is missing an article. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on natural collocations will significantly improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which is not described' (should be 'which have not been described') and 'it affects not only to your reputation but also hide' (should be 'it not only affects your reputation but also hides'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text, such as 'in a very town' and 'in next month edition'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
