Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to draw your attention to an article published in your magazine last Friday. The article was about the oldest government schools in our country, and three schools were featured. Cumilla Zilla School was one of them. The article made me proud since I am a former student of this school; however, the information published about its year of establishment was incorrect.
Cumilla Zilla School was established in 1837, whereas the article stated that it was established in 1847. This information is particularly important because my school is the oldest government school in Bangladesh. Readers may get the wrong impression about this record because Jessore Zilla School was also featured in the article, and it was established in 1841. As a long-term resident of Cumilla, I am very proud of this historical achievement and believe it is my duty to point out the mistake.
Your magazine is renowned both nationally and internationally. Consequently, publishing incorrect information could give a false impression of my town to readers around the world. I would therefore highly appreciate it if you could publish a correction in your next issue and update the article on your website if necessary.
Yours sincerely,
Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identified the incorrect information regarding the establishment date of Cumilla Zilla School, explained the significance of this error in the context of historical records, and provided a reasonable suggestion for the magazine to rectify the situation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and logically presented, demonstrating a strong understanding of the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the reason for writing, the body paragraphs provide the necessary details and arguments, and the conclusion offers a polite call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'however', 'whereas', 'consequently', and 'therefore' are used effectively to link ideas and sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow. Referencing is clear throughout, and the structure supports the overall message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases such as 'draw your attention to', 'get the wrong impression', and 'highly appreciate' are used naturally and accurately. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the professional tone of the correspondence. While the range is sufficient and effective, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. Nevertheless, the current usage is accurate and conveys your meaning clearly without any noticeable errors in word choice or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional and contrastive clauses (e.g., 'The article made me proud since I am a former student... however, the information... was incorrect'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The control over verb tenses, particularly when discussing historical facts versus current actions, is accurate and consistent. This reflects a high degree of grammatical competence.
