Overall Band Score: 6.5 · Cambridge IELTS 14 · 2026-09-09
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in an international travel magazine which contained some information about your town that is incorrect.
Write a letter to the editor of the magazine. In your letter
- correct the information in the article
- explain why it is important for the magazine to give correct information
- suggest what the magazine should do about this situation
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you regarding a mistake in an article published at the Young Travel Magazine's latest issue.
The article states that the local people of Etihad Town arrange monthly bake sales in order to support local small business's. However, that is not the case. Infact the main purpose of organising such events is to collect funds for donating towards charity.
Every ruppee collected helps change lives hence it is crucial to provide readers with the right detailed information. This would greatly help us grow in our mission. We already often face scrutinity over our events by some elite masses who are unable to comprehend our local cause.
Lastly, I would reccomend that you do not print any more copies of this edition and post on social media about this error so that readers are aware of the reality.
Thank you for your cooperation and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Amy Whitehouse

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the error regarding the purpose of the bake sales, explain the importance of accuracy for your charitable mission, and provide a logical suggestion for rectification. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the misinformation; for instance, explaining how the incorrect information might deter potential donors or confuse the community would add depth to your argument and better demonstrate your ability to develop ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Infact', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. To improve, ensure that your linking words are used more naturally and that you vary your cohesive devices to avoid a mechanical feel. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'scrutinity' (though misspelled) and 'comprehend'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'ruppee' (rupee), 'reccomend' (recommend), and 'Infact' (In fact). Additionally, the phrase 'elite masses' is slightly awkward in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate spelling and more precise collocations will help improve your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as the incorrect use of the apostrophe in 'business's' (should be 'businesses') and the missing article in 'at the Young Travel Magazine's latest issue' (should be 'in'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion or impede the reader's understanding. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization rules and article usage. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
