Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you concerning an error made in the recent publish of Travel Times Magazine.

The article stated that Lahore has been highly modernized and all historical buildings have been reconstructed. However, that is not the case. The historical sites, particularly the Badshahi Mosque and Old food street have been preserved and serve as popular tourist attractions.

It is important for travel magazines to not mislead their readers with incorrect information as if heavily impacts how tourists choose to visit a certain travel destination. Prospective travelers often rely on information from travel magazines and plan their itinerary accordingly,

I request you to hold the publish of any further copies of this issue and republish after correcting the information. Furthermore, I highly suggest that you generate a social media post addressing the mistake and also mention the correct information in it.

I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Alana Manoph

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task prompt. You successfully correct the misleading information regarding Lahore's modernization, specifically noting the preservation of historical landmarks like the Badshahi Mosque and Old Food Street. Furthermore, you clearly explain why accurate information is vital for travel magazines—emphasizing how it influences prospective travelers' itineraries. Finally, you offer practical suggestions, requesting a halt on current distribution and a corrective social media post. Your tone throughout is appropriately formal and polite for a letter to an editor. The bullet points from the prompt are thoroughly covered and developed, corresponding well to the Band 7 and 8 descriptors, though with slightly more expansion, it could reach the highest tiers.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from the opening statement of purpose to the final call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas: the error correction, the reasoning, and the suggested solutions. Cohesive devices are employed naturally, as seen with transitional phrases like 'However,' and 'Furthermore,' which guide the reader smoothly through the argument. Referencing is clear throughout the text. While minor mechanical improvements could be made to certain transitions, the overall structure supports the letter's purpose effectively and meets the criteria for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating appropriate terms such as 'modernized,' 'historical sites,' 'prospective travelers,' and 'itinerary.' However, there is a minor lexical error in your opening sentence where you write 'recent publish' instead of 'recent publication.' Despite this, you attempt less common items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'heavily impacts' and 'popular tourist attractions.' The errors do not impede communication at all, placing your lexical performance comfortably within the Band 7 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

Your letter shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like relative clause structure in 'travel magazines to not mislead their readers with incorrect information as if heavily impacts...'. Punctuation is generally well-managed, though there is a minor comma splice error in the third paragraph where a comma is used before 'and plan their itinerary accordingly' where a full stop or semicolon might be better. The majority of your sentences are clear, and grammar errors are infrequent and do not impede comprehension, demonstrating a solid Band 7 performance.
