Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you concerning an error made in the recent publiication of Travel Times Magazine.
The article stated that Lahore has been highly modernized and all historical buildings have been reconstructed. However, that is not the case. The historical sites, particularly the Badshahi Mosque and Old Food Street have been preserved and serve as popular tourist attractions.
It is important for travel magazines to not mislead their readers with incorrect information as it significantly influences how tourists choose to visit a certain travel destination. Prospective travelers often rely on information from travel magazines and plan their itinerary accordingly,
I request you to not release any further copies of this issue and republish after correcting the information. Furthermore, I highly suggest that you generate a social media post addressing the mistake and also mention the correct information in it.
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Alana Manoph

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three parts of the prompt in a well-structured formal letter. You successfully correct the misinformation regarding Lahore's historical buildings by mentioning specific sites like the Badshahi Mosque and Old Food Street. Furthermore, you clearly explain why accurate information is vital for travel magazines, noting how it influences tourist decisions and itinerary planning. Finally, you provide practical suggestions for resolving the situation, including stopping the distribution of the current issue, republishing the corrected article, and posting a clarification on social media. Your tone is appropriately polite yet firm throughout the letter. All bullet points are fully expanded with relevant details, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements and meeting the criteria for a high band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard formal letter conventions. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each distinct point—correcting the error, explaining the importance, and suggesting solutions—housed in its own well-defined paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and referencing pronouns like 'it' are handled naturally to guide the reader smoothly through the argument. The progression of ideas is logical, ensuring the reader can easily follow your purpose from the initial complaint to the final call to action.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint letter. Words and phrases such as 'concerning an error', 'highly modernized', 'prospective travelers', and 'itinerary' show good lexical control. There is an occasional minor error, such as the spelling typo in 'publiication', but this is an isolated slip and does not impede communication. You successfully incorporate less common lexical items related to travel and tourism, supporting a solid performance in this category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writing features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and participial clauses ('Prospective travelers often rely on information... and plan their itinerary accordingly'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is generally strong. There is a minor punctuation slip in the second paragraph where a comma is used instead of a full stop after 'accordingly', but this does not affect clarity or readability. Overall, the grammar supports smooth and accurate communication.
