Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

The purpose of my writing today is to inform you about an article that I recently read in your magazine. I noticed that some of the information about my hometown is incorrect.

As you mention in the article, there is only one car parking area in my area. In fact, there are three car parking facilities in my town. Secondly, the article also says that the shopping centre is closed on Sunday, but this is not correct because it is opened 10 am to 6 pm every Sunday. Lastly, they also mentioned that buses to the town centre usually come every 30 minutes. Actually, they come every 15 minutes.

It is necessary to provide correct information to the magazine writer because many tourist relay on the magazines. In fact, in my town, the mobile network is too slow, so people can not plan their trip without magazines. Wrong infornation cause problem and wastes a lot of time to visit one place.

I suggest magazines should correct all the wrong information that was already posted and also correct through their social media.

I am looking forward to seeing how my suggestions translate into propmt actions from your side. Your kind cooperation on this matter truley appreciated.

Your Sincerely,

Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You effectively corrected multiple pieces of misinformation from the article regarding the parking facilities, shopping centre opening hours, and bus frequencies. Furthermore, you explained why accurate information is crucial for tourists who rely on printed materials due to poor local mobile networks, and you logically suggested issuing a retraction through social media and a printed correction. Your tone remains consistently formal and appropriate for a letter to an editor. Your ideas are well-developed and fulfil all bullet points of the task instructions, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter is clearly structured with an appropriate greeting and sign-off, and you have organised your ideas into logical paragraphs that separate the corrections, the explanation, and the suggestions. You use helpful cohesive devices and transition phrases such as 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'In fact' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, paragraphing could be slightly more refined, and some linking devices feel a bit mechanical. Overall, your logical organisation and progression demonstrate solid control, fitting the criteria for a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate and functional range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, using phrases like 'inform you about', 'incorrect', and 'prompt actions'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'relay' instead of 'rely', 'Wrong infornation cause problem' instead of 'causes problems', and 'truley appreciated' instead of 'truly appreciated'. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, these minor errors and spelling slips prevent you from achieving a higher band. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, reflecting a solid Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The purpose of my writing today is to inform you...' and 'It is necessary to provide correct information...'. There are several instances of grammatical errors, including 'people can not plan' and missing articles or pluralisation issues like 'many tourist relay on the magazines'. Additionally, there is a minor spelling slip in 'infornation' and 'propmt actions'. Although these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication. Your command of grammar balances successful complex structures with recurrent minor inaccuracies, placing your writing firmly in Band 6.
