Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that the information published on international travel magazine about my town Delhi is incorrect.

Your magazine mentioned that Delhi is a rural city and consist poor community all across the state However, this statement is not true, Delhi is divided in 4 regions North,South,East and west all the regions are beautiful. Rich and reputed people live in all these sectors.

Your false narrative can impact the tourism industry of our state also it will leave a negative influence on others who wish to commute here. Also our citizens are disappointed and do not want any misunderstanding.

You can edit the magazine and include topics covering the beauty of my state. Other than that, my town is famous for diversity it include culture and food options from all across the country. Delhi symbolize a politicial state, MP's and MLA lives here with other respected service officers.

I hope you will consider my request and will edit all the false narratives. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Yours sincerely,

Nishant Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the incorrect information is corrected by addressing the claim that Delhi is a rural city with a poor community. Second, the impact on tourism and potential visitors is clearly explained. Third, suggestions are made regarding editing the article and covering topics like the city's beauty and diversity. A formal opening and closing are included. Although some ideas like the mention of politicians and MP's are slightly tangential, the purpose of the letter remains clear throughout. The response easily meets the criteria for Band 6.0 and edges into Band 6.5 due to the clear coverage of all requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical structure with a clear progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized, separating the introduction, the correction, the explanation, the suggestions, and the closing. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or missing entirely, leading to choppy sentences. For example, sentences in the second and fourth paragraphs lack smooth transitions ('Rich and reputed people live in all these sectors' is comma-spliced, and 'Also our citizens' uses repetitive transitional structures). Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent, fitting the descriptors for Band 6.0 well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating meaning. Words and phrases such as 'false narrative', 'tourism industry', 'diversity', and 'politicial state' show an attempt to discuss broader concepts. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, incorrect collocations, and spelling mistakes throughout the text. For instance, 'consist poor community' should be 'consists of a poor community', 'politicial' is misspelled, and 'commute here' is used inaccurately in place of 'travel here'. These lexical limitations and errors place this response comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. While the candidate attempts some complex structures, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, notably run-on sentences and comma splices (e.g., '...all across the state However, this statement...', '...beauty. Rich and reputed...'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('MP's and MLA lives here'). Despite these persistent errors in punctuation and grammar, communication is not seriously impeded, and the reader can easily follow the message. This performance aligns with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
