Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this formal letter to raise the concern regarding the incorrect information of my town Sonipat where I born and brought up.Actually the international travel magazine mentioned that the most famous restaurant or dhaba in haryana named sukhdev dhaba is in panipat which is incorrect. Panipat is completely different city.Sukhdev Dhaba is located in sonipat and offcourse really famous. Sonipat touches the border of the national capital Delhi. So most of the people going from Delhi to Chandigarh on national highway take stop in sonipat to have fod at this famous dhaba. Please correct this information in the article so that it may not mislead their readers for future. Someone who wants to experience the food at Sukhdev dhaba after reading your article may reach Panipat instead Sonipat causing weird situation and poor experience. i hope you understand my idea behind all this .

sincerely

Robin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the incorrect information regarding the location of Sukhdev Dhaba is corrected, specifying it is in Sonipat rather than Panipat. Second, the importance of accurate information is explained by pointing out how readers might be misled and experience a frustrating journey. Third, a clear suggestion is given asking the magazine to correct the information. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is slightly basic and could be extended further for a higher band. For instance, explaining the potential impact on local tourism could have strengthened the response. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement, and the purpose of the writing is clear from the beginning. However, there are notable cohesion and paragraphing issues. The entire body of the letter is written as a single, dense block of text with no distinct paragraph breaks separating the different points (correction, importance, and suggestion). Furthermore, cohesive devices are somewhat basic or missing, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'so that it may not mislead their readers for future.' Transitional phrases between ideas are lacking, making the progression feel slightly mechanical in places. For these reasons, the response aligns best with Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating key concepts about travel, geography, and dining (e.g., 'international travel magazine', 'national highway', 'mislead'). There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by word choice and collocation errors, such as 'raise the concern regarding' instead of 'raise a concern about' and 'have fod' (a typo for food). Spelling and punctuation errors are also present, including missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'Panipat.Panipat is completely different city'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clause structures ('Someone who wants to experience...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('where I born and brought up' instead of 'where I was born and brought up'), missing prepositions, and improper spacing. There is also a tense inconsistency and a lack of proper punctuation boundaries between sentences. Although the meaning remains understandable, the density of grammatical and mechanical errors prevents the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.5 the most accurate descriptor.
