Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that the article in an international travel magazine contained an incorrect information about Ropar which is a small city in India.

I am currently residing in Ropar, therefore, I am familiar with the Head works. The article mentioned that the Head works is not the part of tourist attraction due to lack of maintainance. However, I would like to correct this information. As the Satluj River pass through the Head works, therefore, it is well-maintained by the government.

I hope you will provide the correct information in your article because many people depend on tourists for the employment and wrong information would decline the number of visitors, such as nearby hotels and restaurants will be affect badly.

I would like to suggest you to mention this mistake in your upcoming magazine which clarify the readers that Ropar is a beautiful tourist place and preserved by the authorities.

I will appreciate your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Aastha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly correct the misinformation regarding the Head works in Ropar by explaining that it is well-maintained due to the Satluj River passing through it. You also explain why accuracy is important, noting the economic impact on local tourism, hotels, and restaurants. Finally, you offer a concrete suggestion for the magazine to publish a correction in the upcoming edition. Your purpose is immediately clear, and your tone is appropriately polite and formal for a letter to an editor. The ideas are relevant and well-suited to the task, fulfilling the criteria for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression with a logical layout. Each bullet point is addressed in a separate, distinct paragraph, making the structure easy to follow. You use appropriate paragraphing and standard letter conventions, such as starting with 'Dear Sir or Madam' and ending with 'Yours sincerely'. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, although there are minor issues with redundant connectors, such as using 'As... therefore' in the same sentence when describing the Satluj River. Despite this minor mechanical flaw, the organisation remains coherent throughout, supporting a solid Band 7 rating.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate and generally appropriate for the task, allowing you to convey your message effectively. You attempt some less common items such as 'residing', 'well-maintained', and 'authorities'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as referring to 'an incorrect information' (information is uncountable) and stating that restaurants will be 'affect badly' instead of 'affected badly'. There is also a minor grammatical word-form error in 'which clarify the readers', which should be 'which will clarify'. These errors do not impede communication, placing your vocabulary score securely at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning effectively (e.g., 'As the Satluj River pass through the Head works, therefore...'). However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the Satluj River pass' instead of 'passes'), an article misuse ('the article ... contained an incorrect information'), and a preposition error in 'not the part of tourist attraction' (should be 'not part of the tourist attractions'). Additionally, mixing 'As' and 'therefore' in the same clause is grammatically redundant. While these errors do not stop the reader from understanding your points, they prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 7.
