Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the inaccurate information provided by your magazine. I recently read an article about my home town in your paper mentioning that it is just 100 kilometers from the capital city, which is not correct.
The distance from the capital city is about 600 kilometers via main highway. Even if you take the fast track or the express way, it will definitely be around 500 kilometers to reach my city. Hence, the information need to be amended.
Since, you are an international travel magazine with potentially higher reach, the information provided in your articles should be accurate and reliable. If you provide the incorrect information about the distance, people who plan to drive will definitely have time constrant as they will allocate few hours than required for the travel.
As you are an online magazine, I suggest you to update the data so that whoever sees it in future will get the correct information and plan their journey accordingly.
I hope you would update the data soon.
Yours faithfully,
Subas Bhugai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully satisfies all requirements of the task. You successfully addressed all three bullet points: you corrected the specific misinformation regarding the distance from your home town to the capital, you explained the practical implications for readers such as encountering time constraints during road trips, and you provided a constructive suggestion for the magazine to update their online database. The letter adopts an appropriate formal and polite tone suited to communicating with an editor. The purpose is clear throughout the text, and ideas are well-developed and supported with specific numbers and logical reasoning, meeting the criteria for a strong performance at Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. You effectively use paragraphing to separate different points, starting with the statement of purpose and correction, moving to the explanation of the issue, and concluding with a recommendation and closing remark. Cohesive devices such as "Since", "Even if", and "Hence" are employed to connect ideas, although a few transitional phrases are slightly mechanical. Referencing throughout the text is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow your arguments effortlessly, which aligns well with the descriptors for a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate and generally appropriate for the task. You successfully employ less common phrases such as "inaccurate information", "express way", and "international travel magazine". However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as writing "time constrant" instead of the correct spelling "constraint", and using "higher reach" rather than "wider readership". Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and precisely, justifying a score of 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ("Even if you take the fast track...") and relative clauses. There are some good examples of error-free sentences, alongside a few grammatical slips. For instance, the phrase "the information need to be amended" contains a subject-verb agreement error, as "information" is uncountable and requires "needs". Additionally, a comma splice occurs in the first paragraph: "...capital city, which is not correct.". Nevertheless, these errors do not impede overall communication, supporting a solid Band 6.0 rating.
