Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. The letter correctly addresses the inaccuracies in the magazine article regarding population and facilities, explains the importance of providing correct information due to international reach and impact on town reputation and growth, and suggests practical solutions such as visiting the town or consulting locals before republishing. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor, and a clear position is maintained throughout. While the ideas are somewhat straightforward and could be extended further for a higher band, all parts of the task are fully addressed. This meets the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on the descriptor fit.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as correcting the information, explaining the consequences, and offering suggestions. However, there are some issues with cohesion and referencing. For example, the sentence fragment 'Which shows an inaccurate information' incorrectly uses a relative pronoun to link to the previous sentence. Additionally, punctuation errors and awkward transitions slightly disrupt the flow. Despite these mechanical flaws, the general message is easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'inaccurate information', 'crucial role', 'trustworthy', and 'reputation'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'writting' instead of writing, 'artical' instead of article, 'develoment' instead of development, 'Herby' instead of hereby, and 'interanational' instead of international. Furthermore, phrases like 'half and incorrect information' are awkward and unidiomatic. These errors occasionally cause slight confusion but do not impede overall communication, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The candidate attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, there are frequent errors in sentence structure and punctuation. Notable examples include sentence fragments, such as 'While, reading the the article I noticed that there were few details those were mentioned incorrectly', which contains excessive commas and a redundant article ('the the'). Other issues include run-on structures and incorrect preposition use, such as 'public itself' instead of the public itself. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are persistent enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 6.5, making Band 6 the most accurate assessment.
