Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully corrected the information by stating that the museum in Smiths Falls was funded by the Canadian government rather than an American group. You also explained why accurate information matters by pointing out that the magazine is distributed worldwide and misrepresentation should be avoided. Finally, you suggested that the magazine should address the issue seriously and publish a corrective report. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to an editor, and the purpose is clear throughout the text. Although the ideas are straightforward, they fully satisfy all parts of the task requirements. This performance aligns well with Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptors, so a band score of 6.5 is awarded.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. Paragraphing is used to separate different ideas, such as the correction, the explanation, and the suggested actions. However, some transitions and cohesive devices are missing or mechanical, which slightly affects the flow. For instance, the transition between explaining the importance of correct information and describing the town as an attractive tourist destination feels a bit abrupt. Paragraphing could be further refined to group related points more smoothly. Referencing and conjunctions are generally adequate for the task, supporting clear communication despite minor structural clunkiness. This performance earns a band score of 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and conveys the intended meaning clearly, but it shows some limitations. You attempted some less common items such as 'misrepresentation', 'renowned', and 'dissatisfaction', which demonstrate a reasonable range. However, there are noticeable word choice and article errors, such as 'an articles', 'The informations', and 'attractive destinations for tourist' (plural/singular mismatch). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary remains sufficiently flexible to address the topic. These characteristics correspond directly to the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent attempt at varying your sentence structures. Examples include conditional and relative clauses like 'Please let me know if you need any further assistance.' However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including missing articles ('museum in town'), incorrect pluralisation ('an articles', 'The informations'), and a punctuation error with an apostrophe ('it's' instead of 'its'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, they do not impede overall communication. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6 criteria.
