Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the incorrect population information in the article is identified. Second, the importance of accurate reporting is explained by noting that readers rely on magazines to stay updated. Third, a clear suggestion is made for the magazine to publish the correct data in next month's issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor. However, the explanation of the incorrect information refers to 'irrelevant' rather than 'incorrect' information initially, which is a minor lexical slip. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed with relevant ideas that are extended adequately, earning a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0. Given the clear purpose and coverage, this meets Band 7 standards.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard formal letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as correcting the information, explaining its importance, and offering solutions. Cohesive devices are employed adequately (e.g., 'To begin with', 'However', 'Furthermore'), though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, although 'this details' contains a minor plural-agreement error. The progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction to the conclusion. These qualities place the response comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, warranting a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'paramount', 'alternative options', and 'prompt attention'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies. For instance, the writer uses 'irrelevant' instead of 'incorrect', 'highest number of the human beings' instead of 'most people', and 'assitance' contains a spelling error. Furthermore, phrases like 'next month magazine' and 'publishing the new article' show minor unnatural phrasing. While communication is never impeded, these lexical inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient for flexibility and precision in parts, but errors in word choice place it securely at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or subordinate clauses such as 'I am writing this letter to inform you...' and 'Let me know if you need any assistance...'. There are, however, several noticeable grammatical errors. For example, the use of the present perfect in 'last month, I have read' is incorrect for a specific past time reference (should be simple past 'I read'). Additionally, there are minor agreement issues like 'this details' and a typo in 'propmt'. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are reasonably varied, and the errors do not impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors reflects the Band 6 descriptor.
