Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding an article that recently published in your magazine. The article was related to population and economy of smiths falls where you have misrepresent some information. Smiths falls is diverse town located near to the city of Ottawa which has total population of 0.5 million. It is one of the fastest growing township of Canada. However, you stated that its least visited town in Canada, but in fact, we are receiving highest numbers of visitors every year. However, Yakutsk is the one with least visitors.

It is necessary to fix the mistakes because your magazines are circulated all around the world and printing wrong information affects our hospitality industry.

Could you please rewrite the article with correct information? We would like you to give assurance that it won't happen again in the future.

Please feel free to ask us in the future if you have any doubt so we can avoid sharing any wrong information.

Thank

Regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You correct the incorrect population and visitor statistics regarding Smiths Falls, explain why accuracy is important due to global circulation and its impact on the local hospitality industry, and suggest that the magazine rewrite the article and offer an assurance against future errors. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation regarding the hospitality industry and the suggestion to prevent future errors could have been extended with further details or examples to reach the highest standards. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed, showing a solid command of task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established right from the opening paragraph. You use basic paragraphing effectively to separate your main points, such as the corrections and the subsequent suggestions. However, cohesion is sometimes a little mechanical or repetitive, such as the consecutive use of 'However' to contrast ideas in the first paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, and logical progression is maintained throughout, though more varied and flexible cohesive devices would elevate the structure further. Overall, the layout and flow of your response allow the reader to follow your argument without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'diverse town', 'hospitality industry', and 'fastest growing township'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling, such as writing 'published' instead of 'was published', 'misrepresent' instead of 'misrepresented', and lowercasing proper nouns like 'smiths falls'. Additionally, words like 'magazines' are used where the singular would be more precise. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical profile where vocabulary control is still developing towards greater precision and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, your writing contains several errors in grammar and punctuation. There are frequent missing or incorrect articles, such as writing 'article that recently published' instead of 'an article that was recently published' and 'least visited town' instead of 'the least visited town'. Prepositional errors also occur, such as 'located near to the city' instead of 'located near the city'. Punctuation and capitalisation slips are present, including lowercasing place names. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to grasp your intended message clearly.
