Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Editor,

I am writing regarding an article about my town that was recently published in your international travel magazine. Although I found an article interesting, I noticed that some of information about town's is incorrect and I would like to clarify these points.

Firstly, the article stated that the town's main tourists attraction, Riverside park is open throughout the year and offers boats trips every weekend. However, the park is closed during the winter months because of severe weather conditions and boat trips are only available from May to September. In addition, the article mentions that local history museum was built in 1967, but it was originally constructed in 1957.

It is important for an international travel magazine to provide accurate information because visitors often rely on such publications when planning their trips. Incorrect information often create misunderstanding, disappointment and inconvenience for tourists.

I would therefore suggest that you should correct in your next article and update the online version of the article as soon as possible. It would also be advisable to contact the local tourist information center before publishing future article so that all details are verified.

I hope that you will consider these suggestion and correct the information promptly.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt in a formal and polite tone suitable for a letter to the editor. You clearly fulfill the bullet points by correcting the specific details regarding the park and the museum, explaining why accuracy matters for travelers, and offering practical suggestions for resolving the issue. Your position is clear throughout the text, and your ideas are extended and supported well, such as explaining how incorrect information creates misunderstanding and disappointment for tourists. To move toward the highest band, your explanations could be expanded with slightly more elaboration on the broader impact of the inaccurate magazine article on the town's local businesses and reputation, ensuring every single point is developed to its maximum potential.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate salutation and a clear opening statement of purpose, move smoothly into the corrections and explanations in the body paragraphs, and conclude with a natural sign-off. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, as seen in transition markers like 'Firstly', 'However', and 'In addition', which guide the reader effortlessly through your arguments. Paragraphing is managed very well, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the letter prompt. To achieve an even higher level, you could aim for more varied and sophisticated referencing and substitution across sentences, ensuring that cohesive ties are entirely unobtrusive and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for flexibility and precision in your descriptions. You successfully attempt less common lexical items and collocations with general awareness of style, such as 'severe weather conditions', 'international travel magazine', and 'verify'. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies and article slip-ups in your phrasing, such as writing 'some of information about town's is incorrect' instead of 'some of the information about the town is incorrect' and 'Incorrect information often create' where the verb does not agree with the plural concept or uncountable nature of information. To reach a higher band, focus on eliminating these minor word-choice and singular/plural slips while incorporating more sophisticated idiomatic expressions and advanced academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You display good control of grammatical structures and punctuation, utilizing a successful mix of simple and complex sentences. Your response features a number of error-free sentences, and you handle subordinate clauses quite well, as demonstrated in 'Although I found an article interesting, I noticed that...' and 'It is important for an international travel magazine to provide accurate information because visitors often rely on such publications...'. A few minor errors persist, such as the missing article in 'found an article interesting' (should be 'found the article') and 'future article' (should be plural 'future articles'). To push into the higher bands, you should aim to produce an even greater proportion of error-free complex structures and refine your mastery of articles and pluralisation.
