Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to you regarding an article that you published last month about my city in a magazine. In one part of article, there is an information about the an old library that is not correct because in article its written that old library is now converted in new but in real it is still there and new library is situated beside it.

Moreover, as my town is a historical place, when someone will read this then they will not know that old library is an example for showing how libraries look like back in 1980. Also it will put impact on the income of that place because some people work there and when there will be less visitor, they will earn less.

I will give some recommendations for this, you should stop printing and selling that magazine and correct the information. Also for online version ypu can remove the old one and upload the new, so people can get right knowledge.

Sincerely,

Garry

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three parts of the prompt, addressing the incorrect information about the old library, explaining the impact on visitors and the local economy, and suggesting actionable remedies such as withdrawing the print issue and updating the online version. The position is clear throughout, and the letter format is appropriately adopted. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the explanation of the economic impact and the suggestion for correcting the articles could be elaborated with more specific details to reach the higher descriptors. Nevertheless, the requirements of the task are adequately met, showing elements of solid engagement with the scenario provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from correcting the mistake to explaining its implications and finally offering solutions. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the correction in the first paragraph, the consequences in the second, and the recommendations in the third. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly through transitions like 'Moreover' and 'Also'. Referencing is generally functional, but smoother semantic links between sentences would elevate the flow of the writing. Overall, the organisation is clear and easy to follow, satisfying the expectations for this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating the main points with terms like 'historical place', 'recommendations', and 'online version'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'converted in new' instead of 'converted into a new one', 'put impact' instead of 'have an impact', and 'get right knowledge' instead of 'access accurate information'. Spelling and word-form slips occur, including 'ypu' and 'visitor' instead of 'visitors'. These issues do not heavily impede communication, but they restrict the range and precision of the vocabulary used, preventing a higher evaluation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'when someone will read this then they will not know...'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent issues in article usage ('in article its written', 'the old library'), prepositional patterns ('converted in new'), and tense consistency ('when there will be less visitor'). Punctuation is basic, and some complex structures are rather clunky and prone to errors. While communication is generally maintained despite these flaws, the frequent grammatical slips place the response firmly within the expected parameters for this level.
