Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to formally request regarding the false information of Ahmedabad posted on the front page of one of your recent magazine cover.

To begin with, I recently read your article about Atal Setu near River Front which got inaugrated today in Ahmedabad. Moreover, in your article it is mentioned there are no parking facilities available. I want to inform that there are several parking spaces available nearby and there have been a newly constructed 7 storey parking building where individuals can park their vehicles.

It is important for the travel magazine to provide correct information as there are numerous International travellers who visit Ahmedabad and it can create a negative impact on the town.

To ensure that this type of mistakes are avoided moving forward, I request your team to conduct a thorough research of the place and gather all the information instead of relying on the internet before posting them on your magazine cover.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Vipul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly identify the purpose of your letter by correcting the false information regarding the Atal Setu parking facilities in Ahmedabad. Furthermore, you explain why accuracy is vital, noting the potential negative impact on international travellers and the town's reputation. You also suggest a practical solution by asking the editorial team to conduct thorough research rather than relying solely on the internet. Your position is clear throughout, and the ideas are appropriately extended and supported, fitting the characteristics of this band level. To move towards a higher level, you could have elaborated further on the specific consequences of the misinformation to fully flesh out the explanation section.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The opening greeting sets a formal tone, and the message flows logically from stating the purpose to correcting the facts, explaining the importance, and finally suggesting a remedy before signing off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You also use adequate cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To ensure that' to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. To achieve an even higher band, you could aim for even more seamless transitions between sentences to make the cohesive devices feel completely natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to convey your message with some precision. Words and phrases like 'formally request', 'negative impact', and 'thorough research' show an attempt to use less common items with an awareness of formal style. However, there are a few lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing 'magazine cover' instead of 'article' or 'page', and a spelling slip with 'inaugrated' instead of 'inaugurated'. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching the next band. Strengthening collocations and ensuring accurate word forms will help improve this criterion in future tasks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your syntax. Sentences such as 'To ensure that this type of mistakes are avoided moving forward, I request your team to conduct a thorough research...' show your ability to construct multi-clause sentences. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as the incorrect prepositional phrasing in 'formally request regarding' instead of 'write to complain regarding' or simply 'write to request', and a subject-verb agreement slip in 'this type of mistakes' instead of 'these types of mistakes'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting solid control while leaving room for greater structural variety and accuracy.
