Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to report an inaccurate information published in your international travel magazine about my hometown London.
Firstly, the information about the travel zones of London was incorrect. You mentioned in the article that London is divided into six travel zones, but in recent years, the city has extended to nine zones. This information can be counter-checked on Transport for London website. Secondly, the information on the timings of British museum also needs correction. You have mentioned that museum is open for general public from 9am to 9pm, but this schedule has recently been revised by the authorities and now the new timings are from 9am to 11pm.
As your magazine is popular among international travelers, I believe it is crucial to provide up-to-date information to its readers. Many tourists consult these articles to plan their journey, and any incorrect information can significantly effect their plans. For example, confusion in museum timings can result in resceduling, which changes the complete itinerary.
To address the issue of incorrect information, I would like you to replace the existing article with the updated one with the correct details of travel zones and timings. Also, include the caution that travelers should not rely on provided information and must check the official website of their destination for latest updates.
I hope you will give my request careful consideration. I look forward to see suggested changes in your upcoming article.
Yours sincerely,
Fazal

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You successfully cover all parts of the task well, earning a high band. You effectively correct the specific information regarding London's travel zones and the British Museum's timings. Furthermore, you clearly explain why providing accurate information is vital for international travelers to avoid ruined itineraries, and you suggest appropriate remedial actions, such as replacing the article and adding a cautionary note. Your ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the prompt requirements with only very minor omissions in nuance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of sequencing devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To address the issue', which guide the reader smoothly through your points. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the correction of facts, the explanation of importance, and the proposed solutions into distinct, logical blocks. While referencing is generally clear, slightly more flexible or varied cohesive links would be needed to reach the highest bands, but your current control fully satisfies the requirements for this level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'counter-checked', 'itinerary', and 'careful consideration'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and missing articles that prevent a higher grade. For instance, you wrote 'report an inaccurate information' where 'information' is uncountable, and you used 'effect' instead of the correct verb 'affect'. Additionally, there is a minor spelling error in 'resceduling' (rescheduling). These occasional word-choice and spelling errors are characteristic of this level, as they do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences such as 'As your magazine is popular among international travelers, I believe it is crucial...' and 'Many tourists consult these articles to plan their journey, and any incorrect information can significantly affect their plans.' There are frequent error-free sentences, and your control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong. A few minor errors persist, such as omitting the article before 'British museum' and writing 'I look forward to see' instead of the correct gerund form 'seeing'. These occasional slips show solid command while falling just short of complete error-free consistency.
