Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to complain about the incorrect information that was published by your company in the magazine. What concerned me most was wrong information for opening hours and ticket price for the Hamilton museum.
According to published article, on weekends the museum remains closed which is not true because it is open from 9 am to 1 pm on weekends. Also, it was clearly mentioned that there is a ticket for children who are above 6 years old which is not true. On the official website of the museum it is clearly mention that children under 12 years old can visit without any charge.
Although it's a small mistake, it could lead to some negative outcomes. If someone who wants to visit this public place could read it, it might change his decision to visit the place. So, I would highly appreciate if you could correct it as sson as possible. Should a new article published for this famous place with correct information, it can be easy for the visitors become aware about the fact.
Looking forward to see a prompt action about this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Simran Kashyap

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by clearly correcting the information regarding the Hamilton museum's opening hours and ticket prices, explaining the negative consequences of the errors, and suggesting corrective actions. The position is clear throughout the letter. While all bullet points are covered, some ideas, such as the suggested solution regarding publishing a new article, are slightly repetitive or straightforward, showing the characteristics of a solid response where all parts are addressed yet some aspects could be extended further. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to an editor, and the key requirements of the task are met effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and overall coherent arrangement. Information flows reasonably well from the introduction of the complaint to specific corrections, potential outcomes, and a final request for action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the specific details of the museum errors and the suggested remedies. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical, and referencing links between paragraphs could be smoother to elevate the text fully into the next band level. Connectors like 'Although' and 'So' are used, but transitional phrases lack the seamless integration seen in higher-band responses.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message regarding the museum details and potential visitor confusion. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'negative outcomes' and 'prompt action', though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'sson' instead of 'soon' and the slight awkwardness in 'Should a new article published'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the argument. To achieve a higher score, a wider and more precise range of less common lexical items with more natural collocations would be required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('If someone who wants to visit this public place could read it...') and inversion ('Should a new article published...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('According to published article', 'is clearly mention'), preposition misuse, and minor structural slips, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. The control over grammar is adequate, featuring a combination of accurate and slightly flawed complex sentences that align with this performance level.
